A good serve in pickleball is the first conversation with your opponent. Make it count.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Uxbridge Pickleball Club is to bring together individuals of various ability levels from Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog Townships for the purpose of playing pickleball in a friendly, safe, and supportive environment, improving skills and sharing expertise with one another.
History
Pickleball came to Uxbridge in 2017 thanks to Rodney Vos who had already been bitten by the pickleball bug and wanted to introduce the game to others. With support from the Lions Club Udora/Leaskdale, Rod was able to buy equipment and secure St. Paul’s Leaskdale Church as the venue. For a mere $2 a visit, drop-in players enjoyed introductory lessons, fun tournaments and a chance to meet like-minded people who looked forward to the exercise, fun and camaraderie inherent in the game. Rod always arrived early with a small band of volunteers to tape lines for two courts each session and remove the tape at the end of each day. It was a magical day when Rod’s ongoing search for tape that could remain on the floor at day’s end was discovered by him! Overall, his commitment to the game earned him a well-deserved nomination for the Pickleball Association of Ontario’s Community Award. Sadly, Rod passed away far too early but his memory lives on today as the Uxbridge Pickleball Club continues to meet and thrive at St.Paul ‘s Leaskdale Church.
Upon his passing, Jude Yaksich graciously stepped up and became the new President in order to ensure the club would continue to grow and prosper. Her hard work has only served to grow the sport even more. UPC now runs 5 time-slots a week at St.Paul’s thanks to the generosity of the church and their willingness to provide us with more time slots. Even with added time slots, we have had to cap membership numbers and no longer can we allow drop-in players as the enthusiasm for the sport has outgrown the available space.
Beginning in June of 2025, our club was excited to make use of 4 brand new state-of-the-art courts at the Fields of Uxbridge under the direction of the board headed by Anne Irvine, our newest President. The club offers Skills and Drills sessions, New Player Clinics and a well-received and greatly enjoyed Pickleball Ladder thanks to Sandy Turney, our certified coach and highly-motivated organizer. In addition , we offer many hours of drop-in play. The courts will be shared by our club and the community of Uxbridge for many years to come.

- Being a Good Partner
Most people know when they made a mistake. Being a good partner, doesn’t always mean correcting, but rather encouraging. “Nice try”, “Good idea”, or “You’ll get it next time” can go far in helping your partner get over frustration.
- Returning Those Dreaded Spins
Recognizing the spin on the ball is key to moving and being able to return it. If a ball has underspin, you need to focus on getting under it. Hard topspin deep to the back court might look like it is going out but may drop in with a higher bounce.
